What Measurements Do You Need for Kitchen Cabinets?
When preparing kitchen measurements for cabinets, focus on the overall dimensions of the room as well as the location of anything that can affect your cabinet layout.
Measure Each Wall
Measure the length of each kitchen wall in inches. If your kitchen has multiple walls, measure them individually and record the measurements in order around the room.
For the most useful kitchen cabinet measurements, also note any corners, openings, or areas where cabinets cannot be installed.
Measure Your Ceiling Height
Measure the height from the finished floor to the ceiling. If you have a flat ceiling, take the measurement in inches. For vaulted or unusual ceilings, provide additional details so the layout can account for the available height.
Accurate ceiling measurements are particularly important when planning tall kitchen cabinets.
Locate Windows and Doors
Record the position and approximate dimensions of windows and doors. Include the distance from the nearest wall or corner to each opening.
These measurements help determine where wall cabinets, base cabinets, and other components can be placed without interfering with doors or windows.
Mark Your Appliances
Identify the location of your refrigerator, range, dishwasher, and sink. Appliance positions can have a significant effect on your kitchen cabinet layout measurements.
If you already know the appliance dimensions, include them with your measurements. This makes it easier to plan the cabinet configuration around your existing or planned appliances.
Pay Special Attention to Your Sink Cabinet
The sink area deserves particular attention when taking kitchen cabinet measurements. The sink base needs enough width for the sink itself while also allowing space for plumbing and other components underneath.
If your sink is positioned under a window or next to a dishwasher, those relationships should be included in your measurements.
Before selecting a sink base, review our guide to Kitchen Sink Cabinet Dimensions, which covers standard sink cabinet dimensions, sink types, cabinet widths, and important clearances.
Plan Your Kitchen Layout Around Your Measurements
Measurements are only the first step. The next step is turning those measurements into a functional kitchen layout.
Your cabinet arrangement needs to work around the sink, refrigerator, range, doors, windows, walkways, and available storage space. Planning these elements together can help prevent problems before you order your cabinets.
